I am hoping that all the events you have carefully planned can be moved to the weekend of 15th – 16th August when we will be able to celebrate VE Day and VJ Day, both momentous points in our history. The variety of commemorative events that had been planned, including street parties (like those that were thrown to celebrate VE Day in 1945) have been cancelled. The first May Bank Holiday in 2020 has been moved from a Monday to a Friday so that we could celebrate this occasion starting on Friday 8th May, and over the weekend.Īs we all know, times have changed and much of the world is having to stay home. Victory in Europe Day, generally known as VE Day or V-E Day, is a day celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on.
